Edwardian echoes as schoolchildren flock to Bricket Wood
Monday 16th July 2007
In scenes reminiscent of Edwardian Summer Sundays, 200 children from St Peters School in St Albans enjoyed a "day in the woods" on Monday 16th July, as part of their end of term treat.
Aided by free travel on the Abbey Flyer, the children travelled from St Albans Abbey to Bricket Wood and back. Whilst the funfairs of the Edwardian era may be a distant memory, the children nonetheless had a wonderful afternoon in the timeless pursuit of den-building, sculpture making and games in the wood. And all without the slightest direction from adults!
Parents, staff and children alike had an unforgettable day. Many were begging to be allowed to do it again next year. Some parents even said they would take the train to the woods themselves. Let's hope so!
If your school is interested in arranging a similar trip, we'd be more than happy to discuss your requirements. Please see our Schools page, or contact us. Trips on the mainline, as well as the branch, can be arranged.
For more information about the history of the line, see here. May 5th 2008 is the 150th anniversary of the Abbey Flyer. An extensive programme of celebrations is planned. Watch out here for details!
