Wood sculptor visits Abbey Line schools
May 2007
Budding sculptors at schools along the Abbey Line got to put their creative skills to the test recently, with the help of their very own resident artist.
The Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership sponsored local wood sculptor, John Spielman, to spend a day with each of the six schools along the Abbey Line earlier this year.
Groups of students from How Wood Primary, Park Street C of E Primary, Watling View, West Herts College, St Peter’s School and Berrygrove Primary and Nursery worked with John to create a wood sculpture that represented their thoughts of the Abbey Line.
The pupils got hands on experience with wood craft skills and learnt all about the benefits of local rail travel at the same time. One of the students from How Wood, Tyler, said: “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. We got the chance to do something to put in the school to show what we’ve done. It was a once in a life time opportunity.”
County Councillor Derrick Ashley, Executive Member for Planning, Partnerships and Waste said: “With the help of John Spielman we were able to engage local school children about the importance of local rail travel, and teach them some valuable skills at the same time. The end result is that each of the six schools has a sculpture that they can display and the pupils can feel proud of their achievement each time they pass it."
