Abbey Line
scoops awards
Friday 3rd October 2008
An eye-catching mural at St Albans Abbey Station designed by local school children has won recognition at the UK’s Community Rail Awards.
The project was placed second in a category for community art schemes at the awards, run by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP). The association is a federation of more than 60 community rail partnerships and rail promotion groups.
The mural shows seven trains, each representing a station on the Abbey Line. It was created to brighten up St Albans Abbey Station as part of celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the line. The community rail partnership appointed Groundwork Hertfordshire and local artist Emily Fuller to work with pupils at St Peter’s School in St Albans to devise and produce the display.
The Abbey Line CRP was also highly placed in two other categories at the awards. It came second in a section for best marketing event, in recognition of May 2008's celebration of the line’s 150th birthday. This involved a procession of dignitaries through St Albans, dancing in the streets that harked back to 1858 and a funfair at Bricket Wood which recreated festivities from the 19th century.
The CRP was third in a category for top website - the second
year in a row that the website has won an award. Judges hailed the volunteer-developed
website as "providing all the information you might need to use the Abbey
Line".
